[Blog] I Love This Time Of Year, I Hate This Time Of Year
Written by themightybutch on Monday, 11th Jul 2011 19:53

I love this time of year. The anticipation and hope of our next signing (particularly this close season) is similar in excitement to starting a new game of Football Manager, having £50 million quid to spend and waiting for my bids to be accepted.

I hate this time of year. Little, if no footy for about eight weeks now. Even the Women's World Cup ended in typical fashion - miserably. I discovered ESPN were showing the Copa America the other night and settled down to watch Argentina v Colombia.

This was surely going to be one amazing match. Tevez and Messi were both playing and the Colombians were bound to play well, or they’d get shot. Final score 0-0, and I fell asleep with about 10 minutes to go.

I love this time of year. The pre-season tour is about to kick off and can’t wait to see how the new signings settle in. I know the result is not important as it’s the performance that counts but a win’s a win and nothing beats that victory feeling, deep in your stomach.

Still about six weeks to go until the end of the transfer window. Who else we gonna sign? For the first time in many seasons I’ve been impressed by the manager's ability to attract quality signings to Portman Road.

I hate this time of year. My work productivity is probably down about 20%. I can’t help it. This summer I’ve signed up to email notification when a new headline hits TWTD. I’ve never checked my emails so regularly in anticipation of yet another signing.

I’m also constantly checking the forum for news of players linked. I was at my kids' school sports day today. I couldn’t resist it. The phone was out and my emails and the forum checked every few minutes. I’m starting to despair. I’ve got to do some work.

I love this time of year. Less than a month to go before we kick off at Bristol City. One more pay packet. 26 more sleeps. Blimey, I really hope Paul Jewell gets those new players settled in.

Luckily, I’ve managed to kick that nasty habit – checking the Football Rumours website. Is it wrong that the first thing I’m thinking when I wake up is “must check emails”? Ah, so what. It won’t be long to September 1st and my life can return to a bit of normality. My work productivity will increase and I’ll go back to earning a decent wage.

Damn, I forgot about the blasted loan market!

I hate this time of year. Saturdays aren’t what they used to be. They’re too much like Sundays now. I found myself checking the football news several times this Saturday. Why? Nothing ever happens over the weekend (Lee Bowyer aside). I need to get a life. The thing is, I’ve got a life. Three kids, a wife, a dog, a house that needs decorating, a tumble dryer that needs fixing, a dishwasher that doesn’t wash properly, my garage door's just broken, my car’s filthy, the dog’s got a stomach problem judging by the state of the back garden and a BBQ to organise. Yet I always find time to check the footy news.

I love this time of year. The sport sections of the newspapers are getting more interesting. Loads of money is being spent and players are moving all over the place. Pre-season games have started and Sky Sports News are making the most of it, thriving on Port Vale's 6-2 victory over Stafford Rangers this weekend.

Most of all, I love this time of year because the adrenaline is flowing, the anticipation and excitement of the season ahead is at its peak and the wait is nearly over – roll on 6th August.

Ditto mighty butch! Can completely relate to this. It's 7.20 and I'm about to get up after snoozing the past hour and checking twtd every ten minutes to find the names of the 2 mystery signings pj has made bids for!

'the dog’s got a stomach problem judging by the state of the back garden'

So it's not even like you can play football with the kids to fill the void.
